feat(ui): scroll the focused sidebar panel + refine the nav overlay (#21, ADR-0046 DC3 + DC2)
DC3 — navigation-mode scroll: the focused Tables / Relationships panel scrolls (Up/Down by a line, PageUp/PageDown by its visible-row count). Per-panel offsets are clamped to content at render time, and the renderer reports each panel's visible rows for paging — mirroring the output panel's scroll. render_items_panel / render_relationships_panel take &mut App, count their rows, and store+clamp the offset before building the borrowing lines. DC2 refinement: the expand-on-focus overlay now clears only the sidebar strip plus a one-column gutter, leaving the base output/input/hint visible (unchanged) to the right rather than blanking the whole area — truer to "underneath keeps its layout", with the gutter keeping the cut-off edge clean (chosen after eyeballing both variants). ADR DC2 and the overlay snapshot updated to match. Tests: line/page scroll move only the focused panel and clamp; the render clamps a past-the-end offset so the last row stays visible. |

feat(ui): Ctrl-O navigation mode — peek + expand the schema sidebar (#21, ADR-0046 DC1/DC2/DC4)
Ctrl-O enters a navigation mode orthogonal to the input mode, cycling
focus Input -> Tables -> Relationships -> Input (Esc exits). While a
sidebar panel is focused the sidebar is revealed (a peek, even when
width-hidden) and drawn as an expanded 45-column overlay over a cleared
main area, so the schema is browsable without the cramped 26-column
unfocused width. The focused panel gets an accent border.
Routing lives in the main key handler after the modal gate, so Ctrl-O
and nav keys are inert while a modal is open; in nav mode every
non-navigation key (printable/Enter/Tab/Backspace/...) is inert because
the input is occluded. Scroll keys (Up/Down, PageUp/PageDown) are
reserved for DC3 (next).
New App state: NavFocus { Input, SidebarTables, SidebarRelationships }.
Tests: the focus cycle, Esc exit, input-keys-inert, overlay reveal +
expansion, the accent-border style, and an overlay snapshot.

feat(ui): relationships sidebar panel + schema data (#21, ADR-0046 DB2/DB4)
The left column now stacks a Tables panel over a Relationships panel.
Each relationship renders as three narrow lines — its name, then the
endpoints broken at the arrow (Customers.id -> / indented
Orders.customer_id) — ellipsized past the inner width. The panel is
content-sized within [5 rows ("(none)" when empty), half the column];
the Tables panel keeps the rest (>=3 rows). Phase C adds focus+scroll
for content beyond the cap (clipped for now).
Data path: a new worker Request::ReadAllRelationships +
Database::read_all_relationships returns full RelationshipSchema
records; the runtime posts them via a RelationshipsRefreshed event
alongside the schema-cache refresh, and the App holds them in a new
`relationships` field.
ADR deviation (recorded in ADR-0046 DB2 + index): DB2 specified this
data on SchemaCache; it lives on the App instead — SchemaCache is
walker/completion-facing and needs only relationship names (untouched),
while the full records are UI-only, so App is the cleaner home and it
avoids editing ~23 SchemaCache literals. No behavioural difference.
Tests: panel-height bounds, the three-line render, the empty "(none)"
case, a snapshot, read_all_relationships end-to-end (real DB via the
m:n junction), and the event->field handler.

feat(ui): width-derived sidebar visibility — hide at <=90 cols (#21, ADR-0046 DB1)
The schema sidebar (the left Tables column) is now shown only when the terminal is wider than 90 columns; at or below that it is hidden and the output/input panels span the full width. This reclaims horizontal space on narrow terminals — notably the 90-column screencasts, where the sidebar added little and cost the output panel its width. Visibility is a pure function of terminal width (sidebar_visible); the Ctrl-O peek-reveal lands in Phase C. render() splits the layout conditionally — full-width right column when the sidebar is hidden. Snapshots/tests that rendered at 80 wide now reflect the hidden sidebar; those whose intent IS the sidebar (populated_with_table, the items-panel and drop-table integration checks) render at 110 so the Tables list is actually exercised — one masked-intent integration check (matched "Customers" in the output, not the panel) is corrected the same way. New tests cover the width gate and the show/hide boundary. |

feat(ui): two-row input display on tall terminals (#23, ADR-0046 DA4)
On a comfortable terminal (height >= 40) the input panel shows two rows: the single logical command soft-wraps across them — the first row stops 6 columns short for the ADR-0027 validity indicator, the second uses the full width — so a medium command is fully visible without horizontal scrolling. A line longer than both rows still scrolls (DA3-style, one column each side reserved for < / > markers) to keep the cursor visible. hint_rows generalises to panel_heights(area) -> (input_rows, hint_rows): compact (<40) stays input 1 / hint 2; comfortable becomes input 2, degrading hint-then-input on tiny terminals to protect the output Min(5). render_input_panel splits into render_input_one_row (the existing DA3 path, unchanged) and render_input_two_rows, with a new expand_runs_to_cells helper placing styled cells across the rows. Tests: panel_heights geometry, two-row wrap, overflow-scroll, the indicator-stays-on-the-first-row case, and a two-row layout snapshot. Compact one-row snapshots are byte-identical (that path is untouched). |

feat(ui): horizontal-scroll long input so the cursor stays visible (#23, ADR-0046 DA3)
A command longer than the input field used to clip silently at the right edge, hiding the cursor and the command tail. Now the single logical input line scrolls horizontally to keep the cursor in view, with muted `<` / `>` markers at the reserved edge columns signalling hidden content on either side. The offset is a pure function of (line length, cursor column, field width, previous offset) — input_scroll_offset — so the view only moves when the cursor would leave the window, and one column is held on each side for the markers so a marker never hides the cursor. The stored App::input_scroll_offset resets when the buffer is replaced wholesale (submit, history recall). The ADR-0027 6-column indicator reserve is preserved. Tests: pure-offset cases, tail-visible + head-visible render checks, and the reset-on-submit/history check. One layout snapshot now shows a long command's tail instead of its clipped head. |

fix(ui): geometry-fixed hint-panel height kills the typing jump (#20, ADR-0046 DA1/DA2)
The hint panel's height was recomputed every frame from the wrapped hint content (1–3 rows), so it resized as the user typed and shoved the input/output panels — the flicker visible in the screencasts. Make the height a pure function of terminal geometry (new hint_rows), fixed between resizes: 2 content rows on compact (<40-row) terminals, 3 only on comfortable terminals narrow enough (<54 inner cols) to wrap the longest catalog hint past two lines, degrading toward 1 on tiny terminals to protect the output Min(5). resolve_hint_lines clamps to that fixed budget (long hints ellipsize; short ones leave rows blank). This reverses issue #12's shrink-to-content "reclaim"; its two tests are replaced by an anti-jump invariant plus geometry-helper and third-row tests. Two layout snapshots regenerated. |

feat: copy the output panel to the system clipboard (#11)
New app-level `copy` / `copy all` / `copy last` command (ADR-0041). Delivery is OSC 52 *and* a best-effort native write (arboard), always both — OSC 52 acceptance is undetectable, so a true fallback can't be built. Payload is the panel's plain text exactly as rendered (tags, ✓/✗, box-drawing), drift-locked to render_output_line. arboard added --no-default-features (X11-only; OSC 52 covers Wayland). Amends ADR-0003's command registry; requirements V6. |

feat: colour output tags by status, not mode — readable error bodies (#10)
The output tag was tinted by submission mode for every line kind, so a [system] line and an [error] line rendered with an identical leftmost tag — distinguishable only by body colour. And flooding the whole error body in red made long messages hard to read. Colour the tag by message status instead (its OutputKind): [system] → green, [error] → red; the echo tag keeps the mode tint (ADR-0037's actual purpose — per-command success rides the ✓/✗ marker). Bodies go neutral; the error body stays bold for weight (rustc-style: severity- coloured label, readable bold message). Yields a status traffic-light matching the ✓/✗ palette. Narrows ADR-0037's mode side-channel to the echo line it was always for. ADR-0037 Amendment 1; closes the tag-colour gap ADR-0040 flagged as OOS. |

Add src/dsl/sql_functions.rs (KNOWN_SQL_FUNCTIONS) as the shared source of truth at sql_expr_ident slots: - #15: offer the functions as Tab candidates under a new CandidateKind::Function + ninth Theme colour tok_function (blue, distinct from keyword/identifier/type). - #16: restore the column-typo flag the #6 fix had dropped wholesale — invalid_ident_at_cursor now bails only when the partial prefix-matches a known function, else falls through to the schema-column check. A column named like a function (e.g. `count`) is deduped (column wins). `cast` is excluded — CAST(x AS type) is not a plain-call shape. The no-validation-allowlist posture stands: the list drives completion + the typo hint only, never parse-time acceptance. feat: replace the [ok] summary line with a ✓/✗ echo marker
An audit of the command surface found the `[ok] <verb> <subject>` summary line duplicated the echo line above it everywhere; its only unique signal was success-vs-error. Retire it: a command's echo line now resolves from `running: <input>` to `<input> ✓` / `<input> ✗` on completion, and the symmetric `"<verb> <subject>" failed:` prefix is dropped (only the reason remains). Content lines (row counts, structure, plan tree, teaching echo) are unchanged. Echo lines carry an EchoStatus; executed commands push Pending and resolve the oldest-pending echo on their result event (FIFO worker — correct under interleaving). Parse-time and pre-flight rejections are not executed and keep their running: + caret rendering. App-command [ok] lines (rebuild/export/replay) are payload-bearing and untouched. ADR-0040. |

fix: grow the hint panel for long prose hints
A long prose hint (insert field-value hints, the parse.usage.* synopses) wrapped but was clipped by the fixed one-row Hint panel, hiding the most useful tail. The candidate list already scrolled horizontally, so only prose was affected. Pre-wrap the prose body and size the Hint panel to the wrapped line count: one row by default, growing to a 3-row cap and reclaiming the space when short, with an ellipsis backstop on the last row. Also shorten the 299-char create-table usage synopsis to a terse one-liner (the full grammar remains under `help`). ADR-0022 Amendment 5. |

fix: widen undo dialog and polish its summary line
The undo/redo confirmation dialog capped at 60 columns and wrapped even a short insert on wide terminals, showed a lowercase "snapshot taken", a raw ISO-8601 timestamp, and lowercase yes/no labels. Grow the dialog to fit its longest line (bounded 34–100), capitalise Snapshot/Yes/No, and render the snapshot timestamp in local time, human-formatted (24 May 2026, 11:00) via a new chrono dependency (clock feature only; English month names). Yes/No capitalisation also applies to the rebuild-confirm dialog. |

feat: DSL→SQL teaching echo — §4 styled-runs polish (ADR-0038)
Lands the last open item on ADR-0038: the de-emphasised styled-runs rendering treatment for the echo + every category-3 prose line. The echoed SQL now reads as code — the dimmed `Executing SQL:` label plus the SQL portion lexed and coloured the same way the input echo treats user-typed input (ADR-0028 §5 styled-runs over input_render::lex_to_runs in advanced mode). Category-3 prose lines (the DontConvert caveat and the existing illuminating `client_side.*` notes — shortid auto-fill, type-conversion transforms) all render dimmed too, per §6's "de-emphasised prose line" wording, so every cat-3 line is visually consistent. * New `OutputKind::TeachingEcho` variant + a custom branch in `ui::render_output_line` mirroring the OutputKind::Echo input-echo path: strip the canonical `Executing SQL:` prefix, render it with `theme.muted`, then lex the rest in `Mode::Advanced` and emit one span per token. Tag stays `[system]` for visual consistency with other system output. * New `OutputStyleClass::Hint` styled-runs class, resolved to `theme.muted` in `output_span_style`. Used for the cat-3 prose lines (dont_convert caveat + the existing client_side notes). * New const `crate::echo::TEACHING_ECHO_LABEL = "Executing SQL: "` — the byte boundary the ui.rs branch needs is fixed (an i18n template can't provide that), so the label moves from i18n to a constant. ui: re-enable advanced-mode ambient assistance (ADR-0022 Amendment 1)
Advanced-mode hinting + completion-preview were dead: render_hint_panel returned None for advanced mode (stale ADR-0022 §12 gate, predating the SQL grammar) and the hint resolver/ambient_hint never threaded Mode, so a SQL statement was gated as "this is SQL". The unified walker (ADR-0030/ 0031/0032) speaks SQL, so this lifts the gate. - ambient_hint_in_mode + hint_resolution_at_input_in_mode + expected_for_hint_snapshot(mode); candidate/diagnostic/parse sub-calls run in the active mode. - render_hint_panel calls ambient for all modes; one-shot `:` sigil stripped (strip_one_shot_prefix) so `: sel` hints `select`. - ADR-0022 Amendment 1 + README index. Found by manual advanced-mode testing; Phase 2 marked SQL hint/completion green at the engine layer but never exercised the UI. 2g: advanced-mode highlight + engine.* wiring + matrix tests
Cross-cut verification matrix for ADR-0032 Phase 2 is now fully populated with concrete test references — every row green. Filling the matrix surfaced three real gaps that this commit closes. 1. Advanced-mode syntax highlighting (ADR-0030 §8 matrix row). The `ui.rs` Advanced branch routed through `plain_input_spans`, bypassing the highlight walker entirely. In production SQL keywords past the entry word rendered as plain identifiers. Fix: mode-aware variants of `highlight_runs`, `render_input_runs`, `lex_to_runs`, and `input_diagnostics`; the Advanced render path now uses the highlighted form with `Mode::Advanced`. `plain_input_spans` removed (unused). 2. Engine.* key wiring (ADR-0032 §11.4 / §13 matrix rows + handoff §3.3 follow-up). The four Phase-2 engine.* catalog entries were authored in 2d but never reached: `translate_generic` discarded the engine message and returned a vague catalog entry. Fix: pattern-match the engine message text for the four Phase-2 categories (aggregate misuse, group-by required, compound arity mismatch fallback, scalar-subquery cardinality) inside `translate_generic`, routing each to its engine-neutral catalog entry. 3. Matrix-coverage tests. Thirteen new tests covering the rows that had no explicit coverage: - 3 SQL keyword/operator/CASE highlight tests - 4 engine.* engine-message tests - 3 sql_expr column-completion tests (WHERE, HAVING) - 3 predicate-warning slot tests (CASE, ORDER BY, projection) - 1 all-10-playground-types recovery test (tests/sql_select.rs) Plan document (docs/plans/20260520-adr-0032-phase-2.md) updated: every (TBD) row in the cross-cut matrix replaced with a concrete test file::function reference and a green status marker. constraints: CHECK — check (<expr>) at create table & add column (ADR-0029)
The fourth constraint. `check ( <expr> )` reuses the ADR-0026 WHERE-expression grammar via `Subgrammar`, so a check is written in the same language as a `where` filter. - Grammar: a `CHECK_CONSTRAINT` arm joins the shared constraint-suffix Choice; `consume_check_expr` extracts the parenthesised expression (paren-depth aware) into `ColumnSpec.check` / `Command::AddColumn.check`. - Storage: the parsed `Expr` is compiled once to inline SQL (`compile_check_sql` — `compile_expr` + ADR-0028's param-inliner) and stored in that form everywhere — a new `check_expr` column in `__rdbms_playground_columns`, `project.yaml`'s `ColumnSchema.check`, and the column DDL emitted by `do_create_table` / `schema_to_ddl`. - `add column … check` routes through the rebuild primitive (SQLite's `ALTER … ADD COLUMN` cannot carry it); a CHECK on a serial/shortid column is create-table-only and refused at add-column with a friendly message. - `describe` surfaces the CHECK. The database layer now honours the ColumnSpec constraint fields end to end, ahead of the grammar that lets users type them. - `do_create_table` emits ` NOT NULL` / ` UNIQUE` / ` DEFAULT <literal>` per column via the new `column_constraints_sql` helper (the default literal bound against the column's type). - `ReadColumn` gains `default_sql`, read from `pragma_table_info.dflt_value`; `schema_to_ddl` emits it, so the rebuild-table primitive preserves DEFAULT — it already preserved NOT NULL / UNIQUE. - `ColumnDescription` gains `unique` / `default`; `do_describe_table` now sources columns from `read_schema` (one source of per-column truth) and `constraints_display` lists PK / NOT NULL / UNIQUE / DEFAULT. ui: styled-output-line mechanism (ADR-0028 step 1)
OutputLine gains an optional styled-runs payload — a
Vec<OutputSpan> of { byte_range, OutputStyleClass } over the
line text. render_output_line gains a branch: when the payload
is present it renders the text span-by-span, each run's
semantic class (Neutral / Efficient / Expensive /
AutomaticIndex) resolved to a theme colour at render time;
otherwise the existing whole-line kind styling. The echo path
is untouched.
Theme gains `plan_efficient` — a green deliberately distinct
from `system` so green never reads as two things (ADR-0028 §6);
`warning` is reused for expensive steps.
A general per-span output-styling capability (ADR-0016's OOS-3
realized); the query-plan renderer will be its first consumer.
No user-visible change on its own. 1133 passing, clippy clean.

ui: validity indicator rendering + warning theme colour (ADR-0027 step D)
Adds the `[ERR]` / `[WRN]` validity indicator to the input row. `App` gains `input_indicator: Option<Severity>` (the runtime owns its timing — step E) and a pure `input_validity_verdict()` query that runs `input_verdict` in simple mode only (advanced mode is raw SQL, ADR-0027 §7). `render_input_panel` reserves the rightmost six columns of the input row unconditionally (ADR-0027 §4) — a five-column label plus a one-column gap — so the typed command never shifts sideways when the indicator appears or hides. The label renders only when `input_indicator` is set: `[ERR]` in `theme.error`, `[WRN]` in the new amber `theme.warning` (defined for both light and dark themes). The indicator is not yet wired live — `input_indicator` stays `None` until the debounce lands (step E). Covered by a render test and the theme contrast test; the input-panel snapshot is updated for the six-column reservation. |

Implement ADR-0025 — indexes as a DSL DDL feature. - Grammar: `add index [as <name>] on <T> (<cols>)`, `drop index <name>` / `drop index on <T> (<cols>)`, plus a `--cascade` flag on `drop column`. - db.rs: index operations over the engine's native index catalog (no metadata table). Hint: surface ( as a branching candidate; stop red-flagging in-progress Form A values
Two related fixes from a user-reported snag:
1. After typing \`insert into Orders \`, the hint suggested only
\`values\` even though the user could also choose \`(\` to
open Form A (the explicit-column-list variant). The walker
reports both \`Expectation::Word("values")\` and
\`Expectation::Punct('(')\` at that position, but
\`candidates_at_cursor\` had a blanket "no punctuation as Tab
candidate" policy.
Loosened the policy to surface branching punct
(specifically \`(\` opening a sub-shape). Closing punct
(\`)\`), separators (\`,\`), and content-trailing punct (\`:\`,
\`=\`, \`.\`) stay out — the user types those naturally and
advertising them in the Tab menu is noise. New
\`CandidateKind::Punct\` so the renderer colors it as punct
rather than mis-classifying as a keyword.
2. While typing \`insert into Orders (id, CustId, Total) values
(42, 89, 17.59\` (no closing paren yet), the word \`values\`
was rendered in \`tok_error\` red. The walker's
\`Optional(Seq[values, '(', list, ')'])\` was rolling back on
the partial inner match — treating \`(id, CustId, Total)\` as
Form C (bare value list) followed by trailing junk starting
at \`values\`. The classify_input call thus returned
\`DefiniteErrorAt(<values byte>)\` and the renderer overlaid.
Tightened \`walk_optional\`: roll back only when the inner
reports NoMatch (or Incomplete / Mismatch without consuming
anything). Once the inner has committed to at least one
terminal (e.g. matched the \`values\` keyword), propagate
Incomplete / Mismatch up — the user is mid-typing the
optional's content and rolling back would lose their
intent.
The pre-existing chumsky-or_not-style aggressive rollback
covered cases like \`save Customers\` (Optional(\`as\`)
inner is a single Word that returns NoMatch without
consuming, so rollback still fires). Those keep working.
3. Side effect: with \`Optional\` no longer hiding the
in-progress Form A from the leading slice, the walker on
\`create table T with \` correctly reports the next-expected
keyword as \`pk\` — so cursor at the end of the complete
command \`create table T with pk\` would now re-offer \`pk\`
as a Tab candidate against the partial \"pk\". Added a final
filter: when the full input is a valid parse AND the
partial prefix is non-empty, drop candidates that equal the
partial exactly. Preserves schema narrowing
(\`show data Cu\` → \`Customers\` is not an exact match).
Tests:
- New \`in_progress_form_a_values_list_classifies_as_incomplete\`
asserts the input-state for the user's exact scenario.
- New \`open_paren_branching_punct_surfaces_after_insert_into_table\`
and \`open_paren_candidate_is_classified_as_punct_kind\` cover
the punct-as-candidate surface.
- Renamed and rewrote \`punctuation_expected_does_not_produce_candidates\`
to \`non_branching_punctuation_is_not_surfaced_as_candidate\`
to document the new finer-grained policy.
- Existing tests for \`save Tab → as\` and the schema-
narrowing case continue to pass.
Tests: 854 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored. Clippy clean.

Four user-reported gaps from the round-4 testing pass:
1. Empty-prompt hint reworded from "(no active hint)" to
"Type a command — press Tab for options, `help` for a
list" (6 snapshots updated to reflect 80-col truncation).
2. App-lifecycle commands (quit/q, help, rebuild, save/save as,
new, load, export, import, mode, messages) now flow through
the DSL parser:
- 15 new keywords + catalog token entries
- new Command::App(AppCommand) AST with 11 variants
- parse-first dispatch in submit() (app commands work in
both simple and advanced modes)
- pre-chumsky source-slice for `export <path>` /
`import <zip> [as <target>]` mirrors the replay precedent
- UsageEntry registry entries so parse errors surface
relevant usage templates
- `mode <bad>` / `messages <bad>` use try_map for the
friendly "unknown mode/messages" wording
3. DSL completion gaps:
- `1:n` surfaces as a composite candidate at `add `
- --all-rows / --create-fk / --force-conversion /
--dont-convert surface as new CandidateKind::Flag
candidates (coloured with tok_flag in hint panel)
- filter_clause .labelled() wrap removed so chumsky's
expected-set surfaces the constituent options
4. Hardcoded user-facing strings migrated to catalog:
- 4 parser custom errors (incl. the known "tables need at
least one column" wart)
- UnknownType Display now via parse.custom.unknown_type
- UI panel titles + mode labels (Output / Hint / SIMPLE /
ADVANCED / Advanced:)
- app.rs cascade rendering (action labels + summary)
- runtime --resume CLI stderr
- db.rs change-column diagnostic tables (7 headers + 3
wrapper summaries + force-conversion hint)
Tests: 765 → 769 passing, 0 failed, 1 ignored (same doctest
as before). Clippy clean with -D warnings.
Deferred:
- ~25 thiserror #[error] attributes still hand-rolled
(DbError, ArgsError, ArchiveError, PersistenceError,
LockError). Tracked separately.
- DSL/SQL relationship in advanced mode — clarified

amendment to follow.
- Post-complete-parse completion gap (e.g. `save ` Tab

ADR-0022 stage 8 follow-up: fixes from real-app testing
Three fixes from the user's testing run, plus an investigation note on a fourth. #4 Sticky hint during cycling. The previous code recomputed candidates_at_cursor at the post-Tab cursor position, which made the panel whiplash through "what comes next at the new cursor" between cycles. ambient_hint now short-circuits to the memo's stored candidate list while the memo is alive — so Tab Tab Tab keeps showing the same list with the selection moving, then snaps to the post-Tab ambient state once any non-Tab key clears the memo. #2 Candidate ordering and kind-coloured rendering. New `Candidate { text, kind: Keyword|Identifier }` carries the classification through completion, last-completion memo, and ambient-hint payload. candidates_at_cursor now sorts keywords first (alphabetical), identifiers second (alphabetical), and the hint-panel renderer colours keywords in `tok_keyword` and identifiers in `tok_identifier`. Keyword-vs-identifier name collisions resolve in favour of the keyword (rare; the user can still address their table via different syntax). #3 tok_identifier no longer matches theme.fg. Identifiers in the input pane now render in a distinct cool grey-blue (dark) / dark steel-blue (light), so they stand out from prose-like default text without competing with keyword purple. Same colour drives the identifier candidates in the hint panel for visual consistency input ↔ hint. Limitation worth knowing: "keywords first, alphabetical" is not the same as grammatical order. For "add column " the hint shows `table to` not `to table` — chumsky's expected-set doesn't preserve combinator-source order, and encoding it in the registry adds maintenance overhead the fix doesn't cleanly justify. Marked for future revisit if it bites. #1 (Tab does nothing on "add column ") — not reproduced through App::update. The internal logic works correctly: "add column " + Tab inserts "Customers ", second Tab cycles to "Orders ", third to "Thing ". The most likely explanation is a stale binary or a terminal-level event intercept (tmux focus, kitty-keyboard protocol differences, etc.) — needs user verification with a fresh build. Tests: 747 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored (744 baseline → +3: 2 new completion-ordering cases including the keyword-wins-on-name-collision edge, plus 1 hint-mid-cycle sticky test). Clippy clean. |

ADR-0022 stage 8e: invalid-identifier detection + hint variant
Per the user's #5: "if our candidate selection works correctly, then entering a character that removes all matches is the same as entering an invalid token." Closes the loop between schema cache (8c/8d) and live error feedback (4). New `completion::invalid_ident_at_cursor(input, cursor, cache)` returns `Some(InvalidIdent { range, found, slot })` when: - the cursor is on a partial identifier-shaped token; - the parser's expected-set at the start of that token contains a known-set IdentSlot (TableName / Column / RelationshipName); - no schema entry across those slots prefix-matches the typed text. `render_input_runs` extended to take a `&SchemaCache` and overlay the invalid-identifier range with `tok_error` — same visual treatment as the parse-error overlay (4), unified red signal regardless of which detector fires. `ambient_hint` extended to surface `hint.ambient_invalid_ident` when invalid_ident_at_cursor returns Some — wording "no such {kind}: `{found}`" mirrors ADR-0019's engine-error voice for consistency. Catalog + KEYS_AND_PLACEHOLDERS declaration added; validator passes. Render priority: candidates win over invalid-ident (if any schema match exists for the partial prefix, the state is "in-progress completion" not "invalid"). Falls through to the existing parse-error/incomplete/Valid framings otherwise. NewName slots are filtered out at the source — typing into a "user invents this name" position is never invalid (per `IdentSlot::completes_from_schema`). Tests: 744 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored (738 baseline → +6: 5 invalid_ident_at_cursor cases covering unknown-prefix-fires, prefix-match-doesn't-fire, NewName-immune, no-cursor-token, keyword-slot-immune; plus 1 ambient_hint integration test). ADR-0022 stage 8c: IdentSlot propagation + SchemaCache API
`IdentSlot` gains `expected_label()` and the round-trip
`from_expected_label()`. The four slot kinds map to the
user-facing labels "identifier" (NewName), "table name",
"column name", "relationship name".
`ident_ctx(slot)` now actually applies `slot.expected_label()`
as the chumsky label (was documentation-only after stage 6).
Parser errors and the hint panel's "expected: …" prose now
read with the slot-specific name: "expected table name"
instead of the generic "expected identifier". One parser
test updated accordingly; the four catalog `parse.token.*`
keys are unaffected (the slot labels are a parallel surface).
New `completion::SchemaCache { tables, columns,
relationships }` struct + `for_slot(slot) -> &[String]`
accessor. Empty by default; runtime wiring lands in a
follow-on substage. NewName slots return `&[]`
unconditionally.
`candidates_at_cursor` extended to accept `&SchemaCache`:
when the parser's expected-set includes a slot label,
schema candidates from the cache are added alongside the
keyword candidates. Both sources are then prefix-filtered,
combined, sorted, deduplicated. App::schema_cache field
threaded into both the App-side completion paths and the
ambient_hint computation in ui.
Tests: 738 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored (730 baseline →
+8: 2 IdentSlot label round-trip tests, 6 completion-with-cache
cases covering table/column/relationship slots, prefix
filtering, empty cache, and NewName-no-candidates).
Clippy clean.
User-visible: identifier completion infrastructure is in
place but the cache is always empty — runtime wiring (the
next substage) will populate it on project load and after
successful DDL, at which point Tab on identifier slots
starts offering schema names.

ADR-0022 stage 8b: hint panel candidate list with scroll markers
Refactor `ambient_hint` to return a richer enum:
- `Prose(String)` — the existing single-line hint (Valid /
incomplete-with-no-keywords / definite-error states);
- `Candidates { items, selected }` — multi-candidate (or
single-candidate) keyword completion at the cursor.
When `candidates_at_cursor` returns Some, the new
`Candidates` variant wins over the prose framing — the
candidate list is more actionable than "expected: `data` or
`table`". `selected` tracks the live `LastCompletion` memo's
selection_idx for the renderer to highlight.
`render_candidate_line` (new helper in ui.rs):
- All items fit → render space-separated; selected item
rendered bold + theme.fg, others theme.muted.
- Overflow → window centred on the selected item (or
item 0 with no selection); `< ` / ` >` markers at the
edges (per the user's #2). Window expands right-first
then left-first to use available width.
- Returns `Line<'static>` (items cloned into spans) so the
caller doesn't fight lifetimes between the
AmbientHint::Candidates payload and the rendered Line.
Updated callers in ui.rs and input_render tests for the new
signature. Added `ambient_hint_with_memo_carries_selected_index`
test asserting the renderer-side `selected` plumbing.
Tests: 730 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored (728 baseline →
+2 net: -3 reworked + 5 new candidate-related cases).
Clippy clean.
Stage 8c will plumb identifier completion (schema cache +
candidate fetch from worker on demand or pre-cache) and add
the invalid-identifier hint variant.

ADR-0022 stage 5/8: hint panel ambient typing assistance
ParseError::Invalid gains an `expected: Vec<String>` field —
the human-rendered names of the patterns chumsky was looking
for at the failure point (`\`create\``, `identifier`, etc.).
Empty for custom errors, which have no expected-set framing.
Populated by a new `describe_expected()` helper in parser.rs
that humanise() also delegates to (eliminates duplication).
`input_render::ambient_hint(input) -> Option<String>` returns
the hint-panel content per ADR-0022 §6:
- empty input → None (caller falls back to panel.hint_empty);
- Valid → t!("hint.ambient_complete") ("submit with Enter");
- IncompleteAtEof → t!("hint.ambient_expected", expected = …)
listing the parser's expected next tokens, oxford-joined;
- DefiniteErrorAt → t!("hint.ambient_error_with_usage", …)
composing the parse-error message with the matching
parse.usage.* template if a known entry keyword was
consumed, else the bare message.
Catalog gains the three hint.ambient_* keys + validator
declarations.
ui::render_hint_panel resolution order:
1. explicit app.hint (modal contexts) wins;
2. simple-mode + non-empty input → ambient_hint;
3. fallback to panel.hint_empty.
Advanced mode (persistent + one-shot `:`) bypasses ambient
hinting per ADR-0022 §12.
Snapshot: highlighted_input_all_token_classes rebaselined
because the hint panel now displays an ambient hint instead
of the empty placeholder when input is non-empty.

ADR-0022 stage 3/8: simple-mode echo lines highlighted
Lift `dsl::ECHO_PREFIX = "running: "` as a public const,
with a unit test asserting `t!("dsl.running", input = "")`
matches it. The catalog template is now contracted to equal
`format!("{ECHO_PREFIX}{input}")` — a translator changing
the prefix breaks the test.
Add `input_render::lex_to_runs(input, theme)` — a
cursor-less variant of `render_input_runs` for use cases
(echo lines, future hint panel) that need token-class
colouring without an inverted cursor.
ui::render_output_line: when the line is an Echo submitted
in Simple mode, peel the prefix and re-tokenise the rest
through lex_to_runs, rendering each token at its class
colour. Advanced-mode echoes and any echo whose body
unexpectedly lacks the prefix fall through to the plain
rendering.
Tests: 683 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored (682 baseline →
+1 echo_prefix_matches_catalog_template). Clippy clean
(uses let-chain to keep the if condition flat).
Stage 4 adds render-time parse + error overlay so the
failing token in mid-typed input lights up in the error
colour.

ADR-0022 stage 2/8: input panel — token-class highlighting
New `input_render` module with `render_input_runs(input, cursor_byte, theme) -> Vec<StyledRun>`. Lexes the input, assigns each token its `theme.token_color`, preserves whitespace gaps as `theme.fg` runs, and injects the cursor by splitting the run that contains it into before/under/after sub-spans (under marked Modifier::REVERSED). End-of-input cursor is an empty-range sentinel rendered as an inverted space. ui::render_input_panel switches over EffectiveMode: simple mode goes through render_input_runs + a small runs_to_spans helper that borrows from the input string; advanced modes (persistent + one-shot `:`) keep the previous plain before/under/after rendering since the DSL lexer doesn't speak SQL (ADR-0022 §12). Multi-byte UTF-8 in string literals is handled by walking to the next char boundary when splitting the cursor run, mirroring the previous renderer. Tests: 682 passing, 0 failing, 1 ignored (672 baseline → +10: 9 input_render unit tests covering each token class, cursor placements, multi-byte, full-command shape; +1 new "all token classes" UI snapshot). Clippy clean. Caveat (noted inline in the new snapshot test): the TestBackend/render_to_string path records text symbols only, not ratatui style. The new snapshot is therefore a text-layout regression net; the unit tests in input_render::tests are the authoritative regression net for colour mappings. ADR-0019 §9 sweep (3/3): ui.rs prose strings (caught in manual sanity)
Surprise gap from the post-sweep sanity check — `ui.rs` had a substantial set of TUI-rendered strings that the previous two sweep passes didn't cover. Caught by grepping for capitalised literals in `ui.rs` after running the binary smoke check. ## Migrated - **modal.*** — load picker title / empty state / path prompt; rebuild confirm title / "Continue?" prompt. (modal.path_entry's title comes from `save.*` since it's the save / save-as dialog.) - **save.*** — `save` no-op hint, modal titles for Save / Save as, modal prompt body. - **status.*** — status bar `Project:` label and the `(no project)` placeholder. - **panel.*** — `Tables` panel title, `(none yet)` placeholder for empty tables, `(no active hint)` placeholder for the hint panel. - **shortcut.*** — the bottom-bar keyboard hint labels (submit, confirm, cancel, yes, no, load, select, browse_path, back_to_list, switch, advanced_once, cancel_one_shot, quit). Each is a translatable label paired with a key name (Enter / Esc / Ctrl-C / etc.) at the call site. Keystroke names are deliberately left as literals — translating them would mean retraining users away from what their keyboard says. The `push_shortcut` closure's parameter type changed from `&'static str` to `&str` so it accepts the catalog-returned String. ## Deliberately left - **Echo prefix tags**: `[simple] `, `[advanced] `, `[system] `, `[error] `. Their column widths are hardcoded into the wrap-width calculation in `render_output_panel`; translating them would silently break alignment. Worth a follow-up pass if a future locale needs different prefixes (would need `mode.label()` and the echo-tag widths to live behind a single locale-aware function). - **Mode labels**: `SIMPLE` / `ADVANCED` / `Advanced:` rendered in the input panel border. Same alignment reasoning as the echo tags — also they're keywords (the user types `mode simple` to switch), so translating the display label without translating the command word would be confusing. Left as is. - **Visual decoration**: `[Y]`, `[N]`, `[TEMP] `, `>` cursor markers, `█` cursor block, `↑↓` arrow glyph, `›` selection marker. Universal symbols / labels rather than translatable prose. ## Catalog totals The catalog now has ~170 entries across 16 categories. `tests/engine_vocabulary_audit` passes — no engine vocabulary leaks anywhere user-reachable. ## Tally 610 tests passing (no change — pure refactor with identical-output catalog substitutions). Clippy clean with nursery lints. Release builds at 7.8 MB. ADR-0019 §9 is now genuinely complete. |

Iteration 4b: save / save as / new / load with project switching
Adds the rest of the track-2 lifecycle commands (ADR-0015 §11) and the project-switching machinery they need at runtime. Temp vs named distinction: replaced the fragile naming heuristic with an explicit `[temp]` marker in the directory pattern (`<YYYYMMDD>-[temp]-<word>-<word>-<word>`). validate_user_name already rejects brackets, so user-typed names can never collide with a temp marker. The status bar shows `[TEMP] <Display Name>` for temp projects; the prettifier strips both the date and the marker so display names are clean. save / save as: temp project's `save` opens a path-entry modal (acts as save as); named project's `save` reports "already auto-saved; use `save as`". `save as` always prompts. Relative names resolve under <data-root>/projects/; absolute paths used as-is. Copy excludes the per-process lock file; everything else (.db, yaml, csvs, history.log) is copied. new: closes current project, creates a fresh auto-named temp, switches. load: opens a picker. List sub-mode shows projects in the active data root, sorted newest-first by project.yaml mtime; arrow keys navigate, Enter loads, `b` switches to a path-entry sub-mode for projects elsewhere, Esc cancels. Empty data root jumps straight to path entry. Runtime: `Session` holds Option<Project> + Option<Database> so project switches can drop old (releasing lock + stopping worker) before opening new -- required for the "load my own current project" case. `perform_switch` handles Load / SaveAs / NewTemp uniformly. Tests: 332 passing (270 lib + 9 + 5 + 6 + 16 new + 9 + 17), 0 failing, 0 skipped. Clippy clean. |

The worker's do_rebuild_from_text now wipes existing user tables
and metadata before reloading from text, so it works on both
fresh and populated databases. Source text is plumbed through
rebuild_from_text so the explicit rebuild logs to history.log
while the silent on-load rebuild from Iteration 3 stays silent.
Modal infrastructure (App.modal field + key routing + centered
overlay rendering + word-wrap) is reused by Iteration 4b's save
/ save as / load / new flows.
Tests: 314 passing (268 lib + 9 + 5 + 6 new + 9 + 17),
0 failing, 0 skipped. Clippy clean.

Iteration 1: file-backed projects with auto-named temps, lock file, and L1 CLI
Replaces the in-memory database with an on-disk project. Startup either opens a project at the positional CLI path (L1) or creates an auto-named temp project (<YYYYMMDD>-<word>-<word>-<word>) under the OS-standard data directory or a --data-dir override. The new project::Project type owns the directory skeleton and a PID+hostname lock file with stale-lock takeover via sysinfo. The status bar now shows "Project: <Display Name>", derived by a small kebab/snake/camel prettifier. Per-command persistence to YAML/CSV/history.log is NOT yet wired -- that's Iteration 2; for now playground.db carries the state across quits. Tests: 257 passing (231 lib + 9 new integration + 17 existing), 0 failing, 0 skipped. Clippy clean with nursery lints. |

INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE + value model + auto-show, with polish
DSL data operations (ADR-0014): - insert into T [(cols)] values (vals); short form insert into T (vals) omits values keyword for friendlier syntax. - update T set ... where col=val | --all-rows; delete from T where col=val | --all-rows; show data T. - Value AST (Number/Text/Bool/Null) with per-column-type validation in the executor: int/real/decimal/bool/date/ datetime/shortid each accept a documented literal shape and produce friendly format errors naming the column. - INSERT short form fills non-auto-generated columns in schema order; auto-fills serial via SQLite and shortid via the new generator (T2). - `add column [to table] T: c (type)` -- `to table` now optional. Database: - insert/update/delete via prepared statements with bound rusqlite::types::Value parameters. - InsertResult/UpdateResult/DeleteResult: writes return rows_affected plus the affected row(s) only (not the whole table), so users see exactly what changed. - INSERT shows the just-inserted row via last_insert_rowid. - UPDATE captures matching rowids up-front and fetches them post-update -- works even if the UPDATE changed the WHERE column. - DELETE reports per-relationship cascade effects by row- count diffing inbound child tables; UPDATE-side cascades are not yet detected (would need value diffing). - query_data formats cells (booleans true/false, NULLs as None). Output rendering and scrolling: - Wrap-aware scroll: renderer reports both visible-row count and total wrapped-row count to App; scroll math caps against actual displayable rows. Long lines wrap; the bottom line is always reachable; PageUp/PageDown work correctly even after paging past the buffer top. - Multi-line messages (FK error enrichment, cascade summary) split into single-line OutputLines at creation time so wrap/scroll math agree. Runtime / events: - New AppEvent variants for Insert/Update/Delete success carrying typed result structs; DslDataSucceeded reserved for show-data queries. ALTER-via-rebuild recipe (foreign_keys=OFF outside tx,
copy-by-name, foreign_key_check before commit). Reusable for
B2 (column drops/renames/type changes).
- ReferentialAction enum (no action / restrict / set null /
cascade); SET DEFAULT awaits column DEFAULTs.
- __rdbms_playground_relationships metadata table -- names,
auto-generated as <Parent>_<pcol>_to_<Child>_<ccol>.
- Type::fk_target_type() validation at declaration; friendly
errors for type mismatch, non-PK target, missing column,
duplicate name.
- describe_table populates symmetric outbound + inbound
relationship lists. drop_table refuses while inbound
references exist; outbound metadata cleaned up alongside drop.
App / UI:
- In-line cursor editing in the input field: Left, Right,
Home, End, Delete, Backspace honoring UTF-8 boundaries.
- PageUp / PageDown scrolls the output buffer; viewport row
count fed back from the renderer via App::note_output_viewport
so scroll is capped against the actual visible area
(regression-tested) and snaps to the bottom on new output.
- Failure messages quote the command portion ("verb target"
failed: ...) for visual clarity; RelationshipSelector has a
proper Display impl so "no such relationship" reads cleanly.
- Structure rendering shows References / Referenced by sections.
Docs:

DSL parser, async DB worker, types, history, metadata, polish
Track 1 implementation plus polish round. Parser (chumsky): - Grammar-based DSL producing a typed Command AST. - create table X with pk [name:type[,name:type...]] supports arbitrary names, any user type, compound PKs natively. Bare form errors with a friendly hint pointing at `with pk`. - add column to table X: Name (type); drop table X. - Required clauses use keyword grammar; -- reserved for opt-in flags (ADR-0009). Custom Rich reasons preferred when surfacing chumsky errors so unknown-type messages list valid alternatives. TUI walking skeleton (Phase 4)
First implementation milestone: Cargo project, dependencies,
and a minimal but functional TUI shell built on Ratatui +
Crossterm + Tokio in the Elm-style update/view pattern
(Candidate A from Phase 2/3 selection).
Includes:
- Three-region layout: items list (left), output + input + hint
(right), bottom status bar with mode-aware shortcuts.
- Two themes (light, dark) plus COLORFGBG auto-detect, per
NFR-7. CLI: --theme {light,dark}, --log-file <path>.
- Input modes per ADR-0003: simple (default), advanced, with
the `:` one-shot escape including immediate prompt reaction
("Advanced:" label, advanced border) and auto-inserted space
after a leading `:` in simple mode.
- App-level commands: `quit`/`q`, `mode simple`/`mode advanced`
(canonical list per ADR-0003 — remaining commands land in
later iterations).
- File logging via tracing, defaulting to ~/.rdbms-playground/
playground.log so the TUI is not corrupted by stdio.
Testing per ADR-0008:
- Tier 1: 29 unit tests covering input handling, mode switch,
one-shot escape, auto-space, output buffering, CLI parsing.
- Tier 2: 4 insta snapshots (default simple/advanced/light,
one-shot active) of TestBackend frames.
- Tier 3: 7 integration tests driving synthetic events through
App::update + render path.
All green: 36 tests, 0 failures, 0 skips. Clippy clean with
nursery lints enabled.
